Coronavirus apparently has higher morbidity and mortality rates in people with hypertension, and this study posits why this might be. They believe that it might have to do with two medications used to treat hypertension: angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). These both cause overexpression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which potentially increases the pathogenesis of COVID-19.
