At this time, there are no FDA-approved treatments for COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are still being developed or tested. By identifying potential COVID-19 treatments that are already approved for human use with other conditions, the expansive timeline for drug testing can become streamlined. Published on March 21 in the Archives of Academic Emergency Medicine, this article reviews all currently available literature examining the potential therapeutic efficacy of various pre-existing medications for COVID-19 treatment. The authors created an extensive table to summarize findings from the most promising publications: containing the authors and year of study, experimental methods, medication names, and proposed mechanism of therapeutic action.
Warning: Potential COVID-19 medications named in this article are discussed for use in pre-clinical and clinical research only. These medications should not be taken without the guidance of a licensed medical practitioner to prevent infection or treat symptoms.
