Food Waste during the Pandemic

This article highlights some of the food waste problems that farmers are facing that could likely be mitigated with better federal government support. As many of their biggest customers, schools, restaurants, and hotels are struggling or closed, this is impacting farmers that are no longer receiving orders but have many crops that are continuing to grow or animals that are continuing to produce milk, eggs, etc. While in theory, the food could go to those in need, the food often needs to be pasteurized, packaged for household use, or shipped, additional costs that farmers can’t afford to take on.
