Social Distancing Is a Privilege

Charles M. Blow published an op-ed in The New York Times in which he discusses how, although many people believe otherwise, the coronavirus is not an equal-opportunity killer and that the ability to practice social distancing is a privilege that many of the poorest Americans do not have. Moreover, there are racial disparities in social distancing as many people of color, particularly Blacks and Hispanics, do not have jobs where they can work from home.

Blow notes that a report from the Economic Policy Institute found that “less than one in five black workers and roughly one in six Hispanic workers are able to work from home” and that “only 9.2 percent of workers in the lowest quartile of the wage distribution can telework, compared with 61.5 percent of workers in the highest quartile.”
