In San Francisco, two homeless women occupied an empty house in San Francisco on May 1st, and the police detained the women quite aggressively. The demonstration builds upon other general unrest in the Bay Area as the 8,000 person homeless population sees higher stakes of remaining outside amidst COVID-19. Though San Francisco has declared an effort to secure 8,000 hotel rooms for its homeless population. So far, just over 1,000 have been housed and over 2,000 rooms have been secured. It calls into question whether these measures are effective in the middle of a pandemic where time to sheltering is the key to ensuring safety and health?
