Racial Profiling of Black Men in Masks

The Washington Post recently published an article about how two black men wearing masks were followed throughout the store by a police officer at a Walmart in Wood River, Illinois. The article includes a link to the YouTube video in which the two men are seen walking throughout the store as a police officer follows them with his hand resting on his gun. The article notes that many others have reported similar experiences across the country and that this may become more of a problem as the pandemic worsens and wearing masks may no longer be a choice but a necessity. One man in North Carolina mentioned how his homemade masks are always in pastel colors so as to not appear threatening. Unfortunately, as black men (and other groups who are subject to racial bias and profiling in a similar manner) leave their homes, they must be prepared not only for COVID-19, but also for the racial bias and profiling they may encounter even when they are simply shopping for groceries or essential household items.
