Thompson, “The Technology That Could Free America From Quarantine,” The Atlantic, April 7, 2020.

Here, Thompson argues for the implementation of “test and trace,” where GPS phone information is used to trace the COVID-19 trail from an infected individual to other individuals, as a way to alleviate America from quarantine. This “Waze, but for sick” system has been effective in countries like South Korea, Singapore, and China, but it raises questions concerning privacy and ownership of that data. Thompson concludes with, “compared with our life just six weeks ago, smartphone tracing might seem like a violation of our dignity and privacy…but compared with our present nightmare, strategically sacrificing our privacy might be the best way to protect other freedoms.”
