COVID-19 Hits CNN
When I was watching CNN News this past weekend, there were various alerts being released about Anchor Chris Cuomo being diagnosed with COVID-19 and his plans to continue work from home, in the isolation of his basement. I have attached a video below of some of the CNN coverage surrounding his plans to continue appearances on TV, and the ways in which he presents his battle with this illness.
Reactions
Given Cuomo’s brother is the Governor of New York and Chris himself has been a longstanding face on CNN News, this announcement has gained much attention from the news media industry and public masses. These large sources of coverage effect how we view and discuss this disease, and Chris’s case shows what the news and social media may prioritize in coverage and conversation. He serves as an “example”, but one of extreme privilege, that is broadcasted to the country in time when we are trying to make sense of disease narratives.
Twitter Conversations
I have attached some of the polar opinions surrounding this media conversation in efforts to demonstrate how these types of prioritized narratives shape our understandings of COVID-19 in addition to how they can be useful as warnings to the public.
