Police Brutality in India (warning, graphic content)

India has imposed a 21 day lockdown in the wake of the virus, a lockdown that was much needed. However, the enforcement of this lockdown has played out quite abominably, calling into question the ethics and basic civil liberties surrounding such brutality. People are being beaten up by the Indian police on the streets- an action that the rather authoritarian Modi government is encouraging. Essential services, like food and medical delivery, are still running. However, the police is now beating up those delivering essential foodstuffs and medicines, calling into question the democratic nature of the country. India is the largest democracy in world and has come a long way from its problematic past – however, this brutality is leading India down an authoritarian path once again, calling into question institutions and basic human rights.
